Jerry Adler (1929–2025), the beloved actor known to millions as Herman “Hesh” Rabkin on The Sopranos, has passed away peacefully at the age of 96. A veteran of both the stage and screen, Adler was not only a gifted performer but a true gentleman, whose humor, heart, and humanity left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with.

Though he didn’t begin acting onscreen until his 60s, Adler quickly became a familiar and cherished presence. His career, remarkably rich despite its late start, was proof that talent and passion know no age. He first appeared in the series Brooklyn Bridge, and from there, audiences welcomed him into their living rooms for decades.
His portrayal of Hesh on The Sopranos — sharp, complex, and deeply compelling — became iconic. Co-star Michael Imperioli shared heartfelt words after his passing:
“JERRY ADLER (1929–2025) was a fantastic actor and the kindest of human beings. He brought so much humor, intelligence and truth to the role of Herman ‘Hesh’ Rabkin… A true class act.”
Adler’s talents extended well beyond one role. On The Good Wife, he was initially cast for a single episode — but his comic brilliance in one diner scene was so unforgettable that he returned for six seasons, and then continued on The Good Fight for three more. Co-creator Robert King said simply:
“One of our favorite collaborators.”
His long-time friend Frank J. Reilly added another beautiful layer to Adler’s story:
“Not bad for a guy who didn’t start acting until he was 65.”
Jerry Adler’s journey is more than a career — it’s a legacy of perseverance, of joy, and of late-blooming brilliance. His cousin, the legendary acting teacher Stella Adler, helped shape generations of performers. Jerry, in turn, showed us all that it’s never too late to leave a mark.
🎭 From the stage to The Sopranos, from courtroom dramas to tender guest roles — Jerry Adler brought characters to life with grace, wit, and a quiet command that will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Jerry. Your light reached far, and your impact endures. 🤍
