Seven Stop & Shop locations in Massachusetts will close their doors permanently on Oct. 31, the grocery store chain told The Boston Globe on Saturday.
Stop & Shop originally announced in July they would close 32 “underperforming” locations, including seven in Massachusetts, by Nov. 2 to better “position the company for growth,” the store said.
In the July statement, the company said associates working at the closed locations will be offered other positions.
“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said.
A spokesperson for Stop & Shop told the Globe they will begin discounting products at the closing locations at the end of this week. In addition, the spokesperson said they are working with local food pantries and organizations to give away as much unsold food as possible, including distributing 2,500 turkeys to local public housing developments.
“We wanted to make sure that those folks are taken care of for the Thanksgiving holiday,” the spokesperson said to the Globe.
