James Tolkan, a prolific character actor celebrated for his tough, authoritative roles, has died at the age of 94. He passed away Thursday in Saranac Lake, according to a statement from his family.

Tolkan became widely recognized for portraying uncompromising authority figures. Audiences remember him best as the strict Principal Strickland in Back to the Future and its sequels, where his sharp discipline and memorable “slacker” reprimands made him a standout character. In Top Gun, he played the stern commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian, frequently challenging the reckless behavior of Maverick, portrayed by Tom Cruise.
Throughout his career, Tolkan demonstrated impressive versatility. In Love and Death, directed by Woody Allen, he took on the dual roles of Napoleon Bonaparte and his double. He later appeared in Dick Tracy, directed by Warren Beatty, playing a corrupt accountant tied to a crime boss portrayed by Al Pacino.
A frequent collaborator of Sidney Lumet, Tolkan appeared in Serpico, Prince of the City, and Family Business, taking on roles that ranged from police officers to legal authorities.
On Broadway, he was part of the original production of Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet, where he portrayed Dave Moss.
His extensive list of credits also included The Amityville Horror, WarGames, and Masters of the Universe, along with appearances on television series such as Miami Vice, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The Wonder Years.
Born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Tolkan served in the U.S. Navy before training as an actor in New York at The Actors Studio. Beginning his screen career in 1960, he went on to build a reputation as a dependable and memorable presence in film and television.
He is survived by his wife, Parmelee, whom he met during his theater career. His family has encouraged donations in his memory to animal shelters and rescue organizations.
