‘All My Children’ Star Alan Dysert Dies at 75: Remembering the Actor, Teacher, and Beloved Husband

Posted on October 27, 2026

Alan Dysert, the actor who brought the scheming Sean Cudahy to life on All My Children, has died at the age of 75. His wife, Michele Dysert, announced that he passed away on October 23, 2026, remembering him as her partner, best friend, and the love of her life.

For soap opera fans, Dysert will always be remembered for his memorable turn as one of Pine Valley’s troubled characters. But away from the screen, he was also a teacher, writer, musician, and mentor whose encouragement helped aspiring performers pursue their dreams.

A Journey From an Illinois Farm to Television

Raised on a farm in rural Illinois, Dysert took a winding path to the entertainment world. He studied television arts at the University of Illinois and worked in real estate before trying stand-up comedy. In 1978, he appeared on the television comedy Soap, beginning a screen career that would soon introduce him to daytime audiences.

His most recognizable role came on All My Children, where he played Sean Cudahy, the black sheep brother of football star Tom Cudahy. Sean’s devious behavior and troubled storylines gave viewers plenty to talk about.

Dysert portrayed Sean from 1979 to 1981 and returned to the role from 1988 to 1990.

In a 1981 interview with PEOPLE, Dysert spoke enthusiastically about the part and praised the writing he was given. It was clear that he enjoyed bringing the character’s drama to the screen.

A Teacher Who Encouraged Others

Although many viewers knew Dysert from television, his work as an acting teacher became another meaningful part of his life.

In her tribute, Michele remembered him as a mentor who encouraged thousands of students to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. She also celebrated the many creative roles he embraced, including actor, musician, writer, filmmaker, and producer.

His longtime agent, Melinda Eisnagule, told PEOPLE that Dysert had touched many lives through his kindness and positive energy.

Facing Life’s Challenges With Determination

Dysert shared a personal chapter of his life in his 2023 autobiography, Lights, Camera, Cancer! In the book, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with a rare, aggressive, incurable cancer.

His wife did not disclose a cause of death. In her announcement, she said that Dysert had faced health challenges over the years while continuing to approach life with determination, humor, and gratitude.

A Wife’s Heartfelt Goodbye

Announcing his passing, Michele shared the pain of losing her husband and the gratitude she felt for their life together. She described their relationship as “the love of a lifetime.”

She also shared that Dysert wanted the people closest to him to celebrate his life. Remembering him as someone who treasured people and experiences, she invited those who knew him to share a favorite story and remember the joy he brought into the world.

Dysert was a father to two sons, Cody and Cooper.

Remembering Alan Dysert

Alan Dysert leaves behind memories for the viewers who followed his work and the students he encouraged along the way. His performance as Sean Cudahy remains a part of All My Children’s history, while the words shared by his wife and agent speak to the warmth they knew away from the camera.

Our thoughts are with Michele, his sons, his loved ones, and everyone who was touched by his life and work.

Rest in peace, Alan Dysert.
