Jean Lodge, the British actress best known for her role opposite Alan Ladd in the 1954 medieval adventure film The Black Knight, has died at the age of 99.
Lodge passed away on Wednesday, just one day after celebrating her 99th birthday. The news was shared by her granddaughter, Amy Shaughnessy.
She is survived by her sons, Charles Shaughnessy, widely recognized for portraying Maxwell Sheffield on The Nanny and Shane Donovan on Days of Our Lives, and David Shaughnessy, a longtime television producer on The Young and the Restless and director on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Lodge was married to acclaimed screenwriter Alfred Shaughnessy, a two-time Emmy Award nominee who created and served as head writer and producer of the celebrated ITV drama Upstairs, Downstairs (1971–1975). The couple married in 1948 and remained together until Alfred’s death in 2005.
Born Jean Margaret Lodge on August 4, 1927, in Hull, Yorkshire, England, she began her acting career on stage with the Windsor Repertory Company before making her film debut in 1949 with Dick Barton Strikes Back and Dr. Morelle: The Case of the Missing Heiress.
Among her most memorable screen roles was Queen Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur, in The Black Knight, which also starred Peter Cushing. Earlier in her career, she appeared alongside Kenneth More in the 1952 comedy Brandy for the Parson.
Over the years, Lodge built an impressive film résumé that included White Corridors (1951), Final Appointment (1954), Accidental Death (1963), The Eyes of Annie Jones (1963), and Invasion (1966).
Paying tribute to her grandmother, Amy Shaughnessy described her as “a beautiful, talented, complicated, passionate, emotional, energetic woman who was always on the move and full of life.”
“The perfect hostess, Jean enjoyed parties, friends, socializing, the theatre, feeding the ducks, museums, gardening, music, culture, long walks in nature, animals, painting (she was amazing!), cooking, art, traveling … the list goes on,” she wrote.
In addition to her sons, Lodge is survived by her granddaughters Jenny, Katie, Maddy, and Josie, as well as her great-grandsons, Julian and Noa.
